it should not be called "education" at all.

2010.3.28

Dear William,

Thanks for your ideas. And you had reminded me of a long forgotten ideal of
Labrary, which is a mixture of library and laboratory.

You said that:"Confucians believe that education should be available to all, and education content should be made to fit into everyone need, not into any model we have developed on the basis of any abstract ideas..... " are not correct.

"Education should be available to all" is a lie. Since the teaching materials and exam concents are determined by the ruling elite, then there was no freedom in education. The total aim of Confucius was not to promote knowledge, but to setup the mind for a better ruling, with this special way of treating people, it should not be called "education" at all.

with regards,

Leechard.

------------------------------------------

Leechard,

Your article on the education of Chinese and Western culture in Hong kong, and your fan article on that topic is very interesting. I think you are quite right to point out that the centre of gravity of our modern education follows the Western one, that we emphasised more on Western ideas, and less on Chinese one( or you may have it, the other culture one, when we are talking in different countries culture other than Western one.) The Western idea dominance in education, of course, has been criticised by many, including Gandhi, and 林語堂, our famous Chinese writer. They both argue that ignoring the local culture system in education could greatly restrict, and even close, the access of local culture to local students. Consequently, these local students lost 6 most precarious year in their life in learning the Western system and not the local one, and the human material of these students could be wasted. A hundred year has passed since these great gentleman has pointed out these problem, and yet the progress of solving it has not advanced a single step, in my judgement. I wish that more people could pay attention to this problem, which, as you have pointe out, is the core of all problems in our society.

I here wish to make my suggestion to solve this problem. The 9-year secondary schooling, which you are now supporting, is a good idea. We can learn deeper and broader in every fields which are interesting, and very useful to us. Medicine( not the do operation of course), Cookery, Chinese poems, Astronomy. But i am doubtful whether it can solve all problems in education. Some of you may complain that the length of education is too long, and that they should complete education earlier. Some of you, however, have found that there are too much to be learned, and they need more time, more than the proposed 9 year, to have a basic understanding of Chinese and Western culture. Therefore, to suit these party needs, i propose that the education term should be made flexible, subject to the students ability to learn. This is very important, even Confucians believe that education should be available to all, and education content should be made to fit into everyone need, not into any model we have developed on the basis of any abstract ideas. We should allow the abolition of boundary between primary, secondary and tertiary education. This could greatly enhance the flow of ideas throughout the three layer of students in existing system by teaching, discussion and other means. We should allow also a liberation of students curriculum. The existing one has writted away the tree of creativity and tree of good taste, and planted the tree of bad tastes in the society. We must allow them to have more choices of courses, based on their desire, not on availability of places. We should let them to see the highest in the mountain, and deepest in the sea, to train them to be best citizen of our places.

Only when our education is flexible can we begin our project of labrary, your proposal of merging laboratory and library. I am a full supporter of this proposal, and i really wish to see this idea to be carried out by the society. It is the idea that inspire me, and i think, to many people in this blog.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,
William

Harry potter and 西遊記

Subject: Harry potter and 西遊記 2
Date: Sun, 14 Mar 2010 08:55:40 +0800

Leechard,

I enjoy reading your analysis on Harry potter and 西遊記, and i am sure many of your supporters, fans and readers could find it interesting to read this piece of writing now appeared on blog. I wish therefore to thank you for making a good use of the idea set by me, the similarities between Harry potter and 西遊記, which, to the best of my knowledge, is the first comprehensive and inspiring one ever came in public eye. This is a still world open to us, and a treasure waiting for us to find. I am looking forward to reading this too.

Indeed, there is another similarities between Harry potter and 西遊記, which i think you should appreciate. In the final book of Harry potter, Hermione, Ronald and Harry went on for a journey to hunt down the death eaters and destroy horcruxes. In that journey, they had many disagreements on the way they view the world and settle the matters, improved the skills for combating in war against the Dark force at that time, and furthermore developed a better relationship between each other. On top of these the romance between Ronald and Hermione, (or you may have it, Harry and Ginny) is the brightest attraction to many fans( including me), and even many who have not heard of Harry potter story. The story of西遊記, of course is very similar. There is of course no romance between these men in sexual chemistry, and no Dark load dreaming to and working to dominate the whole world 西遊記 story is set. But, in this journey, 孫悟空, 豬八戒, 沙僧, 唐僧 all had disagreement over the way to be taken in finishing the tasks of the journey, and over the views of treating bad guys in the circumstance they had to face. They had used each and every methods available to them, ever the forbidden ones, to solve the crisis, which孫悟空had made the greatest contribution among all four of his team. They had nonetheless developed a team spirit in the end, just like what Harry team did, but in my judgment , Harry’s team has a higher team spirit than孫悟空’s team.

It is not hard to understand why it is the case. Excluding the power of romance taking part in Harry’s team( of which Ronald and Hermione, Harry and Ginny are largely responsible), many can see there is a sense of determination and good faith prevailing in his team. No body could even challenge what Harry was fighting for, They did not fight for the immortal glory in being the first group of people in beating down Voldemort. They did not fight for the amazing romance in shedding blood and treasure in a struggle against the Dark. They fought to restore the world they all loved to a original position, after tainted dramatically by the Darkest force at their world. They wish to preserve the fundamental values of their world, peace, love, and justice, and they understand that to achieve this, they have to offer blood, tears, toil and sweat until the victory is won( To coin a famous Churchill phase). In 孫悟空’s team, they have never got a united commitment, nor do most of them understand true spirit of humanity( except of course孫悟空). With their bias towards the world and imperfect knowledge about the world, they are always cheated by dark guys, and could do some silly things harmful to their own interests, as well as the interests of their friends and those they care for. I can say, with perfect openness, had powerful 孫悟空 been weaker than what he was portrayed in the story, had the merciful God turned his back to this team and refused to offer a single hand to them, had the dark guys made less errors or even blunders in their plan and action, the 孫悟空’s team had, as I can see, many opportunity of being defeated, and even doomed by a opponent both stronger than , equal to and even weaker than them in strength in every tasks they face in this journey. It is true that Harry potter team had a similar fate, but one can hardly see the defeat in孫悟空’s team scale in Harry potter team. When they were carrying out tasks for their world, they have a good understanding on what should be done, and what should not be done, and they did not lose their heart or even beg for a shameful settlement for peace with the Dark who happened to be in the power. They could rather die for the cause they truly believe in, die for the people they loved, than submitting themselves to bad faith and hatred in their world. In西遊記 ‘s world, a majority of people had no spirit of fighting against power that infringe their rights and properties, but to submit themselves wholeheartedly in powers that rule over them. This, I think, is the key difference between the two cultures, Chinese and Western, in their reactions against the power happened to be infringing their rights and properties.

It will be my pleasure if you can allow the two articles I wrote for Harry potter and 西遊記 to be posted on your Thinktank, where good articles are posted there. I am sure that it will be a very interesting topic for many your fans and readers to read and reflect on.

Do you think these two articles are right? I wish to hear your comment on that one.

Best wishes,
William

Dostoyevsky and Byron and Shelley

Leechard,

I am very glad to read your article on the great Russian writer, Dostoyevsky. It has drawn me into a deep insight into the Russian literature, a world so familiar to me, and to the nature of genius in the world. Very often genius in this time is described as people getting over 160 in a IQ test, and get a membership at four years old from a well-known Club dedicated to the intelligent people only. I think you are right, genius is not defined by any membership he get from any club, or any marks he get in a iq test, but the work he produced in making the Earth a better place to live in through his extraordinary intelligence, skills and courage. I am very glad to follow your advice to read the literature work of Dostoyevsky, and I am very pleased to invite my friends who have deep interests in story of genius, Russian literature, and the human nature, to have a interesting study of your article published yesterday. I think they will learn many from this article, just as what I have got.

In addition, I wish also you may consider publishing the article of Byron on your blog. A English noble, Byron is the great English writer in the turn of 19th century. His work influenced not only the English philosophizers, but also the European and American philosophizers, including Dostoyevsky. It was him and Shelley, who as two of the great leaders of Romanism school, brought to the eye of Europe many liberal ideas, equality, fraternity, liberty. Byron was a keen supporter of French revolution, and shown great affliction towards American democracy, whom he saw as the best government system at that time. He also attacked, like Beethoven did in his time, the French Emperor Napoleon, whom they both agreed that greedy had corrupted the great man soul. I am sure you will find it interesting, as you did on Dostoyevsky, to study the biography of Byron, and his great partner, Shelley. They are the star of their times, and with them, a new English culture, with liberalism as its core, was born, which at the Queen Victoria time, became one of the brightest icon you have ever seen in world history book, and bring tremendous change to human society since then.

I really cannot hesitate to read your analysis of Byron and Shelley, and I think many my friends cannot hesitate too. To facilitate your study on these great men, I have now attached in this file a copy of these men biographies.

Thank you very much in advance.

I welcome any idea or enquiries from you on this topic.

Best wishes,
William

Dear William,

Thanks for your good idea. I am now reading the biograpies you had sent to me.

on Khrushchev

Leechard,

I really like your article on Khrushchev, one of the important leader of Russia in 20th century, and one of the most controversial figure in that age. I think you have sound knowledge on this gentleman life and how it affected the world. You are right to point out what several important policies and decisions taken by him in both domestic and diplomatic fronts are , and how they changed the world scene at that time, and had laid down the foundation stone for liberalisation of Russia under another great leader, Gorbachev in later 1980s. It really expands my horizon in understanding Russian and world history at that period of time, and i shall be grateful for effort paid by you to study this gentleman biography and write an article on him. I shall be very delighted to introduce my friends to read that article.

I may also like to add a point on this article, which you and your readers shall find it useful. It is his support to Aleksandr Isayevich Solzhenitsyn, the Russian writer and Nobel Laureate in Literature. In 1956, after the Khrushchev Secret Speech, he was freed from imprisonment in Kazakhstan, where he was close to death because the hard work in labor camp deterioated his health. He would then return to his hometown to produce his great literature works.

In 1962, Khrushchev explicitly supported the Noviy Mir magazine to publish One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich in Politburo presidium hearing. He said there is a Stalinist in each of you, there is even a Stalinist in me. We must root out this evil. One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich caused sensation not only in Soviet Union but also the West, like Harry Potter series in 2000s, due to both its theme and background of author. Being a novel attacking the Soviet system of prison labour, it was a work produced with themes other than politics, and by a non-party member who had been sent to prison for libelous speech about the leader. It was so popular at that time that it was sold out instantly everywhere, and Alexander gained the worldwide recognition of being a spokesman of Russian liberials at that time.

During his office tenure, Khrushchev allowed the Russian schools to study One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich and three other short novels of Alexander, including the Matryona’s Home, the last work Alexander published in Soviet union before its demise. Only after the fall of Khrushchev did Alexander period of writing in Soviet Russia come to an end quietly. His other work, The Cancer Ward, did not get the Russian authorities permission to publish in public, even though he managed to do so. The Secret police in Russia seized his works, and later he was forced to be in exile.

From this story of Khrushchev and Aleksandr Isayevich Solzhenitsyn you can see how he supported the healthy growth of Russian literature, just like Gorbachev later did. Alexander was free to publish his literature works critical of Russian authorities and Russian systems, and Russians were granted the right to access to his work when Khrushchev was in office. It was him who saw the value of Alexander in Russian literature and world literature, while his party colleagues, strictly following the principles and rules laid down by Stalin and Lenin, failed to do so. With this understanding on the power of Alexander writings and thought, he is more important than any Russian leaders in Soviet Era, including Gorbachev, who was widely seen as a successor of him following strictly every footstep taken by Khrushchev in office.( Except liberation of East European nations, it was purely Gorbachev initiative to push for the end of Russian military presence at that region since the End of Second World War and brought freedom to these region people)

Khrushchev is a very complicated figure, in every point of view. He was both a liberal and hawk, depending on angles adopted to study his career path spinning from Imperial Russia to Soviet Russia. But one thing is sure, he is a man placeing interests of Russian nation, not his personal interests at his heart. He determined to attempt every means he thought suitable to take Russia into a path to a strong and noble nation in the World stage, with status not inferior to the Strongest nation at that time, the United States of America. However, the system of Soviet Union and the thought of people at that time, and his ignorance of the downward trend of 20th century thinking, provided a great hindrance for him to push through his policies and programs, and made him a thousand miles away from success he fought for.

I think you may like this article on Khrushev and Alexander, and you may find Alexander information from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solzhenitsyn#cite_note-22. I wish you may write to me on this subject. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Best wishes,
William

On Lincoln and Churchill eloquence in their speech presentation

On Lincoln and Churchill eloquence in their speech presentation

Leechard,

I like your article on Hitler way of speech presentation very much. It has not only served as a guide to study the eloquence of Hitler, but also to study the cause of the bad energy which has been dominating one in 20th century, the century of downward thinking.

Indeed, besides Hitler, Winston Churchill, the great British prime minister in the war with Hitlerism, is also a great orator as well. His speech on 10th May, 1940, when he accepted King’s commission to form the all-party Government to lead the British nation and its Commonwealth and colonies in Second World War, when Germany launched its attack upon France, Netherland, and Belgium, is still electrifying and amazed by many readers and fans. There are so many famous lines in his speech, for example,” I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat”, when he warned his countrymen that they must prepare for a great scarifies in the war, Let us go forward with our united strength, when he asked for the unity of British in the war against that formidable foe. It is his speech which, not only lighten the hope of British, but also the hope of people living in occupied territories, that Britain could and would bring the war with the defeat of aggressors. The spirit of British, after hearing his encouraging words, rose up to a very high level, higher than it had ever achieved at any time when the appeasement policy was carried and the notorious Munich Agreement was signed. I think, using the time-honored word of American journalist, he mobilized the British language and send it into battle.

Apart from Churchill, Lincoln, US President in the Civil War, was also a great orator as well. Do you still remember the Gettysburg Address? In this address, he proclaimed one great idea: Government of the people, for the people, with the people, shall never be perished from the Earth This is one of the most memorable line in his speech, and I think it is the power of this speech that has not only given the energy to the people fighting for the Union Cause in the war, but also given the energy to many other great nationalists after Lincoln.

Here I am very glad to introduce two YouTube video on the great speech of two orators, and indeed politicians in Western World. Winston Churchill speech-Blood, Toil, Tears, and Sweat is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVg7rnRheK8&feature=related. Winston Churchill speech “It was their finest Hour” is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkTw3_PmKtc. Winston Churchill speech:” Address to Joint Session of Congress” in December 1941 is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiVIpZikl-Y&feature=related. Abraham Lincoln Gettysburg Address is : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvA0J_2ZpIQ. I think these YouTube videos and audios could been a good source for your information. You may also ask bookstores, DVD and tape shops to have other versions of these speeches.

I hope, as a way to inspire all gentleman and ladies in your blogs, you could consider writing an article or a series of article, introducing the eloquence of these great gentleman, who have rendered service not only to their nation, but to the achievement of the human being. In this way could we regain the power, the power which has driven us to the age of Romanticism in 19th Century, that could make our living planet the better place to live in.

I wish I could hear your comments made on this subject.

Best wishes,
William

problem of the rats

Leechard,

I cannot agree more with your prophetic words in the article:蟑螂打噴嚏了,怎麼辦? It has been said long time ago by many experts that the dirtiness of the drainage shall make the drainage an ideal habitat for the cockroaches to live and transform themselves into a super cockroaches with resistance against the insecticide we are now using. However, these words went unheeded by majority of people in many quarters of world, and that it really is the problem for human being nowadays.

As the guardian reports today(15 may 2009), rats in parts of Hampshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Swindon and Bristol, were found to undergo mutation that make itself immune to poison towards rodents we used towards them. According to health authorities reports there, 700000 infestations were found in the last year, and an increasing trend to deal with infestation was found. It is very likely, as the authorities there predict that after swine flu, we will soon have to deal with the diseases brought by the rats.

We should not forget that we are presently unprepared towards the threat of these rats diseases. We possess no means to cure patients who get these diseases, and no means to control the rats population in our living places. At present, all our resources is spent on the war with swine flu, which i cannot tell when it will end. But one thing is certain that if this rats threat were to come upon us now, it will, along with swine flu, strike the human beings and its civilization with severest blow. Have you heard of the story of black death in European Middle Ages? High death rate, little economic activities present. It is the time sometimes referred by many later generations as the worst time of the Dark age.

I regard the problem of rat as the very serious one in present time, which i think all the governmental and voluntary bodies should now address and take immediate courses of action towards it. We have to think of new ways to deal with rats, not just killing it with rat killing drugs. This is, i think, the last opportunity to solve rat problem without bringing damages towards our lives and living environment, just like the Munich conference in 1930s to stop the Nazis to conquer the Europe.

I wish i could hear your comments on this.

william

quick-to-recharge battery

Leechard,

Welcome to the new phase in the time of quick-to-recharge battery.

For a long time, we have discussed in theory and tried in experiment to actualise the concept of "quick-to-discharge" battery. A lot of power storage products, for instance, the lithium battery, have been developed. Now a discovery of new kind of lithium battery shall mark one of the turning point in the history of battery. On 10th March, A quick-to-recharge battery has been developed by the researchers of MIT's Laboratory for Electromagnetic and Electronic Systems (LEES). Being made of Lithium iron phosphate, this battery would undertake the task of charging and discharging in a very short time, for instance, 5 minutes. The short-time of charging and recharging is mainly attributed to a modification in structure of lithium iron phosphate in the battery. With a glassy surface coated on the tunnels of the lattice of lithium iron phosphate, more ions are found to be transported on and out of cathode, so the speed of recharging a battery has been greatly enhanced, and much faster than any rechargeable battery we are now using.

I am glad, and i am sure you and your friends will be glad, to witness the latest phase of electirical science development. Modified Lithium Iron phosphate battery shall remove one of the barrier of using a hybrid-energy car, the energy storage problem, and thus making us a step closer to the day of hubrid-energy car. Very soon we are to have hybrid-energy car to be massively produced and used in highways, roads in every quarter of the world, which would reduce much of the pollutant gas emissions so generated from the vehicles we now are using. It would also make many electric appliances, the TV, the radio, the mobile phone, to be more popular in the world becuase the power source of these applicances would be recharged quickly. So, i can prophesy that the battery now developed would be a dorminant player in the battery market in a very short time, with the fading away of all battery used in present time. To sum up, the discovery of new battery has been a strong propenent that give us the momentum to move in an unpredecented fast speed, approaching far closer to the world of electricity, where electiricity will take more active role than it does in the present time to influence every aspect of the our life.

I think that i shall let you see the attached article on that topic yourself. I am looking forward to receiving your reply.

Best wishes,
william

Dishonest explanation of American economic system problems

Leechard,

Obama, once seen by many as the saviour of the world, the Second Lincoln in American history, now did something in contrary to what many have believed. In his first address to the Congress, he condemned the policies of his predecessor, Clinton, Bush, and others, on economic, education, energy field was the cause of present problem, the financial crisis.

Though very amazing, Obama's explanation to the economic difficulties experienced by many, including the United States, is not relevant. As the American writer points out, and we are now bearing the witness of, that at the very center of our economic near-depression is a credit bubble, a housing collapse and a systemic failure of the banking industry. The only feasible and effective solution is to clear these bubbles away, and help the banks to reestablish its asset and its image.

However, what Obama presently plan is in the opposite direction. He is preparing to nationalize the health care, education, and energy system in America, the commanding height of post-industrial society. This is something the investors fear most, and is the cause of the recent market precipitous decline, as shown in the recent rapid fall of New york stock market indexes. Apart from investor, the economists surely cannot accept his policy. The greater bureaucratic control over various system of nation, health, education, energy, is not a cure to structural problem in the financial sector of a highly capitalistic society as America. The greater is the government power over the system, the lesser the effectiveness of the system it is. Very soon all systems, which his administration takes over, shall collapse like a falling building. I do not know why Obama and his economic team members, with immense knowledge in American economics, shall think of, and implement such kind of actions. Were Lincoln to be here to make the decision for America now, he may avoid the mistakes made by Obama.

Perhaps Charles article, appeared on March 6 Washington Post, can give you a deep insight into the implication of Obama's first address to the congress.

Dear William

Thanks for your outline of the Washington post Article on the
US economic matters.

I would not use the word "dishonest" to comment the US policy on
economics. He might be wrong, and he might be "non squitur", but if you say
he is not honest, then you will have to prove it. And what you mention about "nationalization" of the American Education system may not be the actual thoughts of the President, though I had not read his address to the Congress.

your outline is in the 思想資料庫

Leechard,

Here comes a present to Darwin, who has his 200th birthday on 12. The presenter, however, is an organization influencing millions of people worldwide, the Vatican. According to 11 February Times report, the Church has admitted that Charles Darwin was on the right track when he claimed that Man descended from apes. The Evolution theory is compatible with the Christian faith and could be traced to St Auguste and St Thomas Aquinas, the leading official said on 10.

Were Charles Darwin to be alive now, he shall be glad to bear the witness of the scene that Catholic Church announced that they accept his thinking on evolution. Since the publication of Origin of Species, there are many debates on whether we should adopt Darwin's Evolution theory or Creationist theory to answer this question :where the organisms come from? Seeing that evolution appeared to be in conflict with Catholic teaching, creationist, at Darwin's time, was very hostile towards Darwin and his fellows. But all these have gone. In recent 50 years, there are increasing number of biological facts, such as the study of DNA between ape and human, the fossil of early man ancestors, that serves as evidence to support Darwin's theory. At the same time the Church slowly changed its attitude. First, it tried to study origin of man in Darwin's perspective in 1950. In 1996, it was Pope John II to proclaim, in his speech, that evolution theory was "more than a hypothesis" In 2009, Catholic Church, under Pope Benedict XIV, prepares to go a step further, that formally recognizes the excellent work of Darwin in evolution, and to agree that what Origin of Species said is in parallel with the first Chapter of Genesis.

The significance of this event, i think, should not be underestimated. It is the second time, in recent years, that the Church attempts to resolves hundred years long dispute between science and Religion, followed by the Galileo's event. Galileo, like Darwin, was condemned by many and the Church as anti-Christian, while he was advocating a theory that Earth was not a centre of univense. But, with many scientific evidences proving Galileo's theory, he is now accepted by the Church. Now Church is prepared to do the same for the father of evolution, Darwin, which should be welcomed and commenced by all. It is a historic, landmark moment in the present time, in World History, and in Catholic’s history that Church agrees that Darwin and Galileo's theory can be linked with Bible teaching. In other words, Science and Religion are not, as many people believed, in antagonism with each other. They are telling us the same things, but in different angles, on what has happened in universe, and where we come from. So, from now onwards, the time for conflict between science and religion arising on matters related on universe and our origin has ended. The time of communication and cooperation between Science and Religion has begun. People can concentrate their effort in understanding the world deeper and broader in scientific and religion context. Scientists would appreciate the value of love in the society, while religion believers would adopt a scientific way to learn the world. To me, and to many worldwide men concerning on human future, it is a good start for rebuilding the strong world culture since divided, fragmented in years long conflict between science and religion, Only when we are united in our thinking can we begin our planning and execute our plan of rebuilding the world culture. In this sense, it is a good present by Church to all of us in year 2009.

We wish to see more and more such kind of events to take place in Church in the present time.

Here attached is Times report which can serve as your reference.

I am looking forward to hear from you.

Best wishes,
William

Dear William,

Philip Pullella

http://www.reuters.com/article/scienceNews/idUSLG62672220080916?pageNumber=1&virtualBrandChannel=0

(Biblical literalism)

Could Lincoln replace Churchill and Roosewelt?

Leechard,

Churchill, and Roosewelt, both leaders of UK and US, are, in many historians' and general public's view, praised for their excellent performance in World War II. Chruchill, at the fall of Netherland and Belgium, and the surrender of Britain, made many speeches encouraging his countrymen and the Nazi-occupied region people to fight against Germany and Italy, In battle of Britain, when most of British cities were under the heavy fire of German airplanes, it was Churchill who proclaimed"We can take it', and encouraged British to fight. Later his words in this war was being considered to mobilise the English language and send it into battle. Roosewelt, not merely prepared US into war with Axis power, but also tried many means to restore world peace and prosperity. Together with Churchill, Roosewelt had many conference with many ally nations, China, Soviet Union, and Turkey, to discuss a plan to settle all problems in their regions before the war. Atlantic Charter, made after Churchill and Roosewelt, was a draft of United Nation Charter, which gave birth to Unitef Nations organisation. Bretton Woods meeting, attended by economists around the world, defined the structure of world economic system after world war II, the current one, i mean. Their achievements in military, social, economic and political one would be very great in their times.

However, i do not think that they are best people suitable to head the national government in world war 2. It has been well said of Churchill and Roosewelt mistakes in World War 2. Churchill delayed the invansion of France for 2 years(1942-1944) because not only North Africa was in Axis power, but he and his generals were worried of the WW1 trench warfare likely to be happened in France. So, in 1944, while Allies landed at Normandy and moved eastwards, Soviet Union also moved westward, and in a year time, occupied much of Eastern European countries territories, Poland, Czechsolavkia, Hungary, Romania. It was Roosewelt who agreed to give a huge sum of US money in an aid to Soviet Union in the Yalta meeting. Soviet Union then had more resource to develop their military strength and the power to spread communism in every quarter of globe. By making these mistakes during World War 2, Churchill and Roosewelt turned the world onto a path to cold war, which is a dark page in history.

I may want to ask : if Lincoln was in charge of the war, instead of Roosewelt, Churchill, would the world be better? Lincoln may be well-aware of the nature of Soviet government and Stalin, Soviet leader, and could male a better policy towards Soviet Russia, making it strong enough to defeat Germany but not to threaten the world peace. Lincoln may attack France earlier to allow the war to end in the soonest time possible and avoid to use Nuclear bomb in Japan, to prevent bloodshed and death of civilians there.

I think many historians have asked this before, but still no one can get a satisfactory answer for that. Could you answer this for me?

I welcome any comment made on this topic.

Best wishes,
william

Enjoy the year of Ox

Dear William

This is a imaginative question but not a proper question.
Because every one in history has his own position: i.e., his own thinking network and could not be replaced by another imaginated character.

Lincoln is respected by many, but, he is Lincoln in the contest of history, not
in the contest of creativity.

Has president Bush achieved his education goal

Has president Bush achieved his education goal

Leechard,

In your yesterday article, you have asked this: Has president Bush achieved his education goal set in his 2001 inguaration speech? George Bush has, in this speech, pledged to reclaim America's schools, before ignorance and apathy claim more young lives. Yes, he was right in pointing out the root of the problem: Americans lost their control over their schools. Losing the control over school is a root of many problems. Americans hated each other more, resulting in many serious campus murder cases, leaving many bloodshed and death of young people. American education deteriorated very rapidly that mathematics level rated farr behind those Asian and European countries. This line of speech showed that Bush and his colleagues, the Republicans, were well aware of the issue.

However, during his tenure at office, Mr Bush failed to launch a comprehensive reform to restore American education system. We can see many terrible violence events in schools, most notably the one in Virginia University, where a Korean immigrant student killed many his classmates there two years ago. American youth mathematical, scientific, and linguistic skills deteriorated. A recent study showed that among those aged between 18 and 24, 40% would never read a book, and two-third of them would know nothing of the Iraq location in world map. These are signs of the failures in American education system. Despite Bush and Clinton policies to restore it to normal, education system still has many faults, urgently needed for a repair......

Amadeus

A Response to the Guardian Article by Khaled Diab

Here we have a Hong Kong response to the Guardian Article by

Khaled Diab
guardian.co.uk,
Friday July 25 2008

Title:

Back to basics on climate change

Here are the main points from that article:

★mainstream thinking has focused on the idea that a low-carb Kyoto energy diet will save our obese societies.

★ I don't believe that our oil-based economies are sustainable and I think that switching to renewable energy is essential to our future.

★ According to a 1999 estimate by the American Petroleum Institute, the world's oil supplies would be depleted between 2062 and 2094.

★This was based on estimated proven reserves of 1.4 to 2 trillion barrels and consumption at 80 million barrels per day.

★in 2005, daily oil consumption already passed the 83.5 million barrel per day mark.

★Coal at current production levels is likely to run out within 150 years. If it is used as an oil substitute, many decades would be knocked off this projection.

★At the current rate of deforestation, all tropical forests in the world might disappear by 2090.

★more than half of Papua New Guinea's rain forest – the third largest in the world – could disappear by 2021.

★we will be facing a global food and wood shortage pretty soon, as well as the collapse of the farming land that will replace the forests, due to soil erosion and depletion.

★Droughts and desertification are also threatening millions of people. The Sahara desert is growing at a rate of up to 30 miles a year;

★Within a couple of generations, the global economy will have outgrown the globe.

★There is a desperate need to rethink our attitudes to consumerism, the disposable culture, overpopulation and the economic growth orthodoxy

This article was first published on guardian.co.uk on Friday July 25 2008. It was last updated at 19:00 on July 25 2008.

The Response from a Hong Kong based observer:

Dear leechard,

The article about the environmental problems of earth that people now face is nothing of interest to me. It has been talked round the clock in many media sites. What interests me more, is a comment to this article. To let you have a picture on it, I have attached these two documents which both of them are in doc form.

This article is really interesting, as this gentleman has found a special way to view the modern society problem. I consider this writing as the representative of all essays telling us that the present environmental deterioration is not as serious as what we think, monetary methods can solve all crisis, just like The film made by Channel 4 in UK( I will talk about that later). I would not agree with much of the points given in this article, and I shall explain it one by one.

The first mistake, I think, is his belief that money is so powerful that could help us to solve any energy problem, water problem, and metal shortage problem. That is what he said: “The more expensive they are, the more we will find.”,” Wealth insulates us from the worst” I cannot deny that, in a short time, man, driven by the strong monetary power behind the discovery of new resource, shall use their ability to the hilt to find these resources. Also, man, being motivated by large monetary reward, shall try to modify what he did to minimize the waste generated and maximize the volume of output. But if it were successfully solving all the problems of the world, why, according to the result revealed by the research, the resource that we now have is more scarce, compared with that we had 20 years ago? I think he would not answer it using his logic. He may have mistaken the focus that problem of scarcity we now have, which is the demand for that product, has outstripped the supply of that resources and the situation is going to get worse nowadays. Where can people find another source of resources so that the supply of resource can still be consistent with the demand? Apart from known source which their produce is decreasing rapidly, the unknown sources, claiming themselves to be rich of oil and food, shall find it hard to be able to produce enough resources for human in long term if the present trend of consumption continues. They would soon run off one day. It is just like the son of a wealthy man spent all his money one day and finds that he is now in heavy debt and finds it difficult to maintain the basic standard of life.

The monetary forces, or the inevitable hand (in Adam’s view), is of no use in solving the problem but to make the problem more severe. Only those tycoons would still have the power to buy these resources for their own uses and the poverty people can find no means to survive. If such situation appears, I do not think that it is a society that man can still live, and it is the biggest threat that human would face soon. And I believe that even money can buy all the guarding apparatus for themselves, they can never buy a thousand, and even, hundred years of safety. You and many philosophers said, Money is just a tool for exchange

The second mistake is his negligence of the impact of environment when trees in developing world are cut. His words are “The West has more (trees) than ever “and “the Developed World we have more forest than we did in 1900. What is the difference?” when answering the wood shortage problem I am very sad to hear so, as the trees there shall help to regulate the climate of the world by controlling carbon dioxide content in atmosphere. If there were no trees, these places shall become a desert and the people living there shall move, which creates, in turn, the immigration pressure on developed world. He is also in doubt with the rate of deforestation in Panama forest, but I think it is highly likely the present trend shall continue. As he has pointed out earlier, if man understands that cutting all forest in his country shall bring him good fortunate, he shall be happy to cut all of them out, and, it would take a long time to let trees to grow into a forest again in these regions . I consider that his saying” If wood is worth something it is worth planting.” the most astonishing one I have seen. Were he on the right side, then all government and the green organizations’effort to plant the trees is surely a waste of time. Is that the case? Woods are not only the climate regulator, it is the habitat of many animals, the source of so many things necessary for human. From these,I think he should not deny the importance of these wood.

The third mistake is found in this statement: “Or more likely it is just a natural cycle of no interest. Notice that no one much suffered much less died” which is his perspective towards the matter mentioned in these lines in the essay: “:Even in more temperate Europe, droughts have dramatically increased over the past three decades – the areas affected have gone up by a fifth between 1976 and 2006. The 2003 drought affected about 100 million Europeans and southern Spain might become desert in the coming decades. I have seen so many expressions saying there is no link between global warming and the drastic climate change, and this one is the typical one, but I, you and many loving the Earth, shall find it impossible to support this, as we know that the Earth has deteriorated, and at a rate that is out of the expectation of these people. I shall not dwell at that point as I think I have talked a lot on it.

The only good point I found is” We have our intelligences which make the resources we have more and more valuable all the time. So we can increase economic growth simply by using the same amount of resources but more intelligently.” I have a strong conviction that we are so intelligent in solving many problems of the world, but I am still doubtful whether economic growth shall occur if we have faced a severe shortage of resources, and there is still a heavily dependent on the traditional methods that would waste a large amount of them, in industries and any daily practice by man. He should bear in mind that the intelligent way of using resource is not simply the modification of the techniques, but to change the way that people think in production, and more important, the world. As far as I know, most people are not prepared to do so though the time remaining for us to adapt the new condition of world is very little before any disaster occur.

If he were allowed to read your blog, he could understand the biggest problem that human now face is, and could understand what the problem of his article is. He could also learn that the best solution is to create a society with new network of thinking and I hope he could support it.

I wish that you would like this article. I have no objection to make this article in public. I welcome any comment if you have.

Best regards,
william

Dear Dear

 Dear

No.6928 2008 0201 Friday)

Every Thing Comes in Parables

The mystery of the kingdom of God has been given
to you. But for those outside, everything comes
in parables, so that the more they see, they don't
perceive; the more they hear, they don't

To save the earth

Dear Leechard,

I sent you the article about mixing of Japanese and Indian culture, written by Tao kit (issued on 7-1-2008), and a letter arguing whether it is possible for Chinese to alter their thinking in order to search for a solution to all problems ahead, namely diseases, the energy deficiency, at the same time. Why I do so is that I want you to think in a different perspective to the current problems on Earth.

We all agree that the Earth is facing a problem never happened before: The severe effect of global warming, indicated by the significant rise in temperature of places around the world. The pollution on environment, like the water, the air, has caused disastrous damages to all parts of the world, particularly in developed world. The cause of this problem should be the expansion of the consumption of natural resources in human activities driven by strong human desire in the past century, as you and many philosophers have pointed out. The Western people, and Indian, Japanese people, who are alarmed by these adverse effects of the world, has done a lot to conserve the environment. While Chinese, along with other greedy people, has done nothing significant to save the earth. Many Chinese, as many observers said, are more concerned about their money and what they can enjoy during their life time. They have a common fear that contribution to conserve the environment would erode their interests. This is why the conservation policies adopted in China and other places would be much difficult to implement due to the strong resistance of such people.

I realize that these people, love money more than anything in the world, would not listen to philosophical advice to save the world, just like yours. This is a sad thing but we must admit it. There are many easier and quicker paths that we can choose if we have to save the earth. I think introducing your idea to India and Japan would certainly be a good method. Many intellectuals there, wishing to save the earth immediately, would be willing to hear your advice and carry out them effectively. This is the idea I got from Tao Kit’s articles about Japan and India cultural exchange. If this idea could be adopted by you, the danger of doomsday would be slower to come than expected. I do not meant to abandon these greed Chinese, but these people now, still have difficulties in understanding you and many philosopher’s idea on how to live peaceful and effectively on earth. I think we should put less effort on them at this moment, and hold the discussion for them when these people are prepared.

Yours sincerely,
William

(PS. I think that the people that would take part in discussion shall not be Indians and Japanese, but people from all races with a common morale: they love the world and would do as much as they can to save the world.)

Dear leechard,

I have read an article in appledaily (http://appledaily.atnext.com/template/apple_sub/art_main.cfm?&iss_id=20071108&sec_id=38167&subsec_id=38173&art_id=10390948&cat_id=3530509&coln_id=3530511),

The main theme of this article is very similiar to those in your essay, it talks about the the freedom of speech in Britain as exemplified by the movement banning slaverrity and that in china when Qing emperor and his government was trying to supress the freedom of speech,

Here is the article:

做 Convince me ─ ─ Convince me , 就 是 「 令 我

I hope you would like it.

Yours sincerly,
